"SMS Aggregator Ratings"
An SMS aggregator maintains direct connections to the major wireless carriers. They deliver their customers' text messages, which they aggregate, through their gateways. An aggregator allows you to go to one place to connect to all of the wireless carriers.

They Say: "VeriSign Mobile Delivery Services assists carriers and content providers in the delivery of wireless messaging, distribution of mobile content, efficiently handling of billing, and offers user-friendly features that enhance service offerings and increase revenue opportunities." We Say: Verisign has their hand in a number of businesses, most notably domain registration. They are unresponsive to sales inquiries, as would be expected of a company that is not primarily focused on providing SMS aggregation services. |
| 6 |
They Say: "Content Gateway is Air2Web’s core platform that delivers messages—SMS, MMS and WAP Push—through all major US and international carriers. Content Gateway maintains multiple direct binds to all major US carriers as well as connections to countries around the world. It handles billing, subscription management, binary delivery, and device detection." We Say: Air2Web's pricing -- in most cases -- is not competitive with similar services. The only way to bring per message pricing down to a competitive level requires extremely large bulk purchases, placing the service out of reach of most businesses. |

Good job picking the top
Good job picking the top five. Thanks for posting them. I've never used any of these businesses but have heard they are good.

SMS aggregators
There are a number of reasons to go through an aggregator. There are also companies like mine that sit between you and the aggregator which lowers the start-up costs and set-up time.
The first and most important reason is that with the carrier email gateways you have absolutely no way of knowing for sure that the message was delivered to the phone. If the phone is not on, you don't know for sure that it will be delivered when it goes active. Going over a short code allows you to get real-time delivery receipts of every message. You know if it has failed, or was rejected, or if it is still waiting for delivery.

Good top 5
When you go to Neustar's website and check out their list of aggregators - http://www.usshortcodes.com/csc_aggregators.html - it seems like a daunting list. My company looked around and called almost every one of these so-called aggregators, and only got a response from 5-6 of them. The others were not really in the aggregation business and seemed to not want my business, either. For cost reasons, I ended up going with a shared short code solution, but the best customer service amongst the aggregators was split between Open Market and MX Telecom. (And btw, the Air2Web guy still stalks me to this day.)
